Feb 28 marks the celebration of National Science Day in India to highlight all scientific and technological research and developments in the country. In a country like India with such a huge number of population and their ever increasing needs it becomes necessary to draw attention the role of scientific developments in the overall growth of the country including efforts towards environmental protection.

National Science Day is commemorated as on this day in the year 1928, C.V. Raman announced to the world his famous discovery, RAMAN EFFECT which earned him a Nobel Prize.

This time various scientific organisation and research laboratories have organised to stage several programmes with the theme “Understanding Planet Earth”. Universities are also organising seminars and discussion on diverse matters across the country.

Environmental science being the foremost issue in the present world scenario has been a major concern. Earlier in January 03, 2008 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched the Outreach Campaign for Understanding Planet Earth at Andhra University, Vishakhapattnam.

Government from various fronts in a constant effort from the Department of Science and Technology has launched awareness drive on the current climatic change cycle and its grave impact on human kind.

With the presence of eminent scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan sharing his views on this special theme, the national awards for science and technology communication for stupendous contribution done in the past five years will be presented to individuals and institution.

Instituted in 1987 the award recognises talent, technology and aspiring scientists considering the national needs and relevant development on tomorrow’s technologies. The award is given to those individuals or organisations who work in a constant endeavour to promote and popularize scientific outcome in sustainable development.

As per the press report of the government, a Science Exhibition has also been organized on this occasion at Technology Bhavan, New Delhi.

Basic Objectives

Besides celebrating National Science Day on Feb 28 and National Technology on May 11 every year, the prime objective of the Ministry of Science and Technology is to popularize scientific application among general masses as a great step to human welfare.

The day is also to inculcate scientific temperament among students, young scientists through close interaction by conducting lectures, seminars, symposia of various disciplines, which creates awareness among all regarding latest developments in science and technology. Such activities hold much importance as these should be disseminated to the next generation.

With such an emerging scenario and competitive economy it has become necessary to understand the ever changing requirement of common man and build up appropriate technology and skills to make the life of human more easier but at the same time adding longevity to earth’s life.
