Bhopal gas victims protest against police atrocities

Bhopal, Fri, 09 Dec 2011 ANI

Bhopal, Dec 9 (ANI): Victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas leak tragedy staged a protest against police personnel in Bhopal after being beaten up over a demand for compensation from the government.

The victims, supported by state's main opposition party, the Congress, raised slogans and sought the resignation og Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

On December 3, the protestors had blocked railway tracks into and out of Bhopal to mark the 27th anniversary of the gas tragedy. The protest turned violent after police tried to clear the tracks ..

Civic body member Mohammad Sagheer, told media that Police were squarely responsible for the incident.

He warned the state government of a similar backlash and threatened Chief Minister Chauhan with ransacking his house.

Earlier, the Central Government had announced a compensation package for gas leak victims and their families, but this is yet to be delivered.

In the early hours of December 3, 1984, around 40 metric tonnes of toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked into the atmosphere from the Union Carbide plant with the breeze carrying the lethal gas to the surrounding slums in Bhopal.

Union Carbide settled its liabilities with the Indian Government in 1989 by paying 470 million dollars before another U.S. company, Dow Chemicals, bought it over.

The former Indian arm of Union Carbide was found guilty of negligence and fined 10,600 dollars. Its officials were sentenced to two years in jail and fined 2,100 dollars each.

The Indian Government had announced a Rupees 713 million package in June in addition to a compensation package of Rupees 6.69 billion following a public outcry over non-payment to victims. (ANI)
