Obesity and Ayurveda

Obesity is major life threatening disease that can cause several other complications in our body and trigger heart attack, cardiac arrest, diabetes and heart failure, sleep apnea and many more diseases etc.. Currently a huge population in the world are suffering this problem. It happens due to several factors including bad genes & heredity, wrong life style and routine, wrong dieting, lack of exercise and hormonal disorders.

Obesity and Ayurveda

Increased weight or obesity is giving sleepless night to millions and no one wants extra flab on his/her body. Besides stealing the charm of a sculpted body, it also raises an alarm as it may invite a host of diseases. Needless to say, obesity has become a global concern. Slogans like; how to loose weight, how to shed some extra flab and getting a slimmer you, are doing the rounds in various media channels. And it is here cosmetologist and fitness experts are making a killing. But even shelling out large amounts of money, it is no guarantee that you get the perfect shape and that too without side effect. There are instances of side effects and regaining the weight in the following years. A sizable number of Indian populations are obese and the number is only rising. Here, ayurveda, India’s own system of medicine offers a ray of hope to people who are getting panicked by addition of some extra kilos.

Ayurveda: Understanding obesity in a new light

Ayurveda conceives the problems of obesity in different light that is entirely different from what is said by modern system of medicine. And the way this Indian system of healing treats this problem does not go well with the custodians of modern medicine. Ayurveda does it through its very own prakriti analysis, which strikes a resemblance with genetic coding. Once they are through with the prarkrit analysis, they get an insight into the problem and prescribe a better prescription to tackle this disease. On this basis, they even prescribe what lifestyle changes need to be brought.

Understanding obesity

Ayurveda delves deep into why some people are more likely to get obese while others remain in shape provided they consume similar kinds of food in almost similar amounts. Every person has a different set of metabolism, on which modern medical science has very little control. This metabolic system is specific to every individual. Like genetic codes of modern medicine ayurveda, comprehends the matter in the elements like air (Vata), fire (Pitta) and water (Kapha) that makes the very foundation of ayurveda.

Prakriti, is an individual’s psychological and physical state that makes him vulnerable or tolerant to the diseases and health problems. This knowledge gives ayurveda physicians understating to handle problem of obesity in a particular person. For Ayurveda, a person with the Kapha element is more likely to fall prey to obesity.

Role of Fat Tissues

Ayurveda elaborates upon the role of fat tissue well. As per this ancient system of healing, fat tissues preserves life does thermoregulation of the body and cushions the organs in different situations. Here, let us have take on the various symptoms of obesity. Premature ageing, increased hunger and tiredness are some of the common symptoms of obesity. The obese person may found himself short of breath and unable to run quickly even situation demands so. He may get irritable or confused in even a not so difficult circumstance. Reduction in sexual performance has also been marked.

Risks associated with obesity

Apart from taking a toll on the personality or beauty it may invite various complications that include:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Fistula
  • Lipoma
  • Hyperacidity
  • Renal disorders.

Ayurvedic treatment of Ayurveda

Ayurveda does not have a universal approach to obesity, as prakriti of different persons have different attributes. Those with prevalent vata elements require vata purification therapies that include cleansing and oleation enemas. Abhyanga and herbal steam bath also does well with such kinds of persons. For those with dominant Kapha element, internal medications and external treatment should be prescribed.

Ayurvedic Remedies for obesity

Those with obesity should take a diet rich in barley, green gram, red gram and horse gram. Small amounts of honey are also prescribed. Cook your meal in sesame oil or mustard oil. Turmeric, black pepper, ginger and rock salt are common spices that help shed extra kilos. Bitter tasting vegetables offer a relief from obesity. Intake of sweets cold drinks, alcohol, non-vegetarian food and junk food should be frowned upon. Living a life full of activities also helps. Some ayurvedic herbs like Amrutha (Tinospora cordifolia), Mustaa (Cyperus rotundsa) Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula), Bibhitaka (Terminalia belerica) and Aamalaka (Embica officinalis) have been found effective in the treatment of obesity.

In Ayurveda, the treatment of obesity is personalized and depends upon the prakriti of the individuals. An Ayurvedic physician determines the prakriti of person and prescribes a medicine that best suits his system. Here treatment is focused on balancing the doshas.
