Deshmukh opposes demand of Vidarbha region as a separate state
New Delhi, Nov. 22 (ANI): Union Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Tuesday denounced the demand of Vidarbha region as a separate state saying adequate measures are being taken for the development of the region.
Deshmukh, who was earlier the chief minister of Maharashtra, said the state government has allocated ample of funds and projects for growth of the constituency.
"That is basically because of their under development. The basic issue is for development that is why we have separate development board for Vidarbha, one for Marathwada, one for rest of Maharashtra and that is under the constitution of India and Governor is head of that and for last 10 years because of those development boards certainly lot of money has been allocated to Vidharba development," he said.
Deshmukh further announced that the state is looking forward to generate 140 Megawatts solar power by 2016, which will include the exploitation of the Vidarbha region that would definitely boost the development in the area.
Vidarbha is the eastern region of Maharashtra made up of Nagpur Division and Amravati Division. Its former name is Berar. It occupies 31.6 percent of total area and holds 21.3 percent of total population of Maharashtra.
It borders the state of Madhya Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Andhra Pradesh to the south and Marathwada and Khandesh regions of Maharashtra to the west. (ANI)
