Rajouri, Mon, 14 Nov 2011 ANI

Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir), Nov.14 (ANI): In a joint operation, Jammu and Kashmir Police and personnel of the 60 Rashtriya Rifles battalion raided a militant hideout, and seized a cache of arms and ammunition from a forest area in Rajouri district.

Acting on a tip-off, the team began a combing operation in the Wali Doke Forest belt on Sunday. The recovery included one AK-47 assault rifle, one 30MM pistol, five UBGL grenades, 45 rounds of AK-47 and 70 rounds of 9MM pistol.

"So, in that area, he (informer) received some information about a hideout, and thus, he shared this information with us. After that, police and our joint team went for this operation. And today morning, around 1 (local time), we ended the recovery operation. (Q. What all has been recovered from the hideout?) In this recovery, there is one pistol, grenades and some other ammunition besides some medicines, a ICOM set, with the help of which, they used to communicate with each other," said Colonel Neeraj Sood, Commanding Officer of the Indian army's 60 Rashtriya Rifle, while briefing mediapersons.

The other seized items included two magazines, one ICOM radio set, two bags, one tape recorder, one medicine bottle and a ten feet long rope.

Colonel Sood further noted that the operation helped in preventing any untoward incident planned by the militants in the region.

"The importance of this operation is that even today the in Pir Panjal range and other areas under 60 RR, there are still some places where arms and ammunition kept by militants in their hideouts is available. In today's time, when we are saying that peace is prevailing in the entire region, this recovery shows that if these arms and ammunition find their way into the hands of wrongdoers, then they can misuse it against the common people, administration, police forces and army," said Colonel Sood.

The restive region of Jammu and Kashmir has been witness to numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration from across the border in the last two decades.

The Himalayan region is one of the world's most militarised zones, with India deploying close to half a million troops to quell a rebellion that was triggered off in 1989.

Although militancy has weakened over the past couple of years, the tactic of mass street protests has grown.

Since Indian Kashmir first witnessed insurgency in 1980s, nearly 50,000 people have been killed in the strife-torn region.(ANI)
