Threat to blow up Mumbai Income Tax offices

National, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Mumbai, Oct 1 (IANS) The Income Tax (IT) head office has received a threat that bomb blasts will be carried out at all 14 branches of the IT department here between Oct 27 and Oct 31, officials said Wednesday.

The threat, on an ordinary postcard, unlike e-mail threats in the recent past, has been taken seriously and the police department has been informed, an IT department official told IANS.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Protection & Security) Vinay Kargaonkar said the threat to the IT offices in the city is being investigated.

According to the postcard, all the 14 IT offices in Mumbai and its suburbs would be blown up between Oct 27 and Oct 31. The postcard goes on to says that the plan to blow up the IT offices would be similar in magnitude to the recent bombing of the Marriot Hotel in Pakistan.

It then challenge the authorities, saying: 'Do whatever you can to stop it'.

The post office from where the postcard, written in good English, originated and the sender's identity are not yet known. It was delivered with the normal mail packets to the IT head office a couple of days ago and was forwarded to the police Tuesday evening.

"We have already provided the IT offices with security,' Kargaonkar said.

The measures suggested by the police to the IT office include deploying private security guards, metal detectors, CCTV cameras, reducing the number of entry/exits at all the offices and thorough screening of all visitors.

The police are flummoxed at the new strategy employed by the sender of the postcard, discarding the modern day email.

Meanwhile, there were four bomb hoax calls in Mumbai Wednesday which kept the police, already strained with providing security for Eid and Navaratri, on their toes.
