Washington, Sept 28 (ANI): Famed Director Roman Polanski was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland recently.
The Oscar-winning director reportedly received a standing ovation as he picked up his award two years after he was arrested for a decades-old sex-crime case.
The 78-year-old filmmaker was due to collect his award in 2009 when airport officials in Zurich took him into custody on a charge of unlawful sex with a minor back in 1977, after which he fled America and skipped sentencing for the offence.
In 2010 he was allowed to walk free after fighting against an extradition to U.S, following several months of jail time and house arrest at his Swiss cottage.
"What can I say? Better late than never. It's a very moving moment for me. It's a strange anniversary for me - two years, day for day," Contactmusic quoted him as telling the cheering audience.
"Certain parts of it I'd rather forget, but I'm happy to be here. It was not only a blow to me, but also to my family and the festival itself. I would in particular like to thank the prison staff who tried to make my stay as bearable as possible, including the head of the prison of Zurich," the director added while commenting on his arrest.
