Manmohan Singh sanctions ex-gratia for earthquake victims

New Delhi, Sep 19 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. two lakh each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the next of kin of persons deceased and Rs. one lakh each to those who were injured in Sunday's earthquake.

 

"The Prime Minister is grieved to learn about the loss of life due to the earthquake which struck the state of Sikkim and its neighbouring States. The Prime Minister has sanctioned an ex-gratia of 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the next of kin of the persons deceased and 1 lakh each to those who got seriously injured in the earthquake," said a Prime Minister's Office (PMO) release.

 

A powerful earthquake with a 6.8 magnitude hit Sikkim and several areas in the eastern part of the country and neighbouring Nepal on Sunday evening.

 

The States of Sikkim, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram were affected in this earthquake.

 

As per information received from the affected States, Sikkim has reported 7 deaths and 64 injured, Bihar 2 deaths and West Bengal 5 deaths and 29 injured, while one person was reported to be injured in Assam.

 

The epicentre of the quake was located at Mangan and Sakyong areas, over 50 kilometres from Gangtok on the Sikkim-Nepal border.

 

Tremors were also felt in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Delhi.

 

The Prime Minister had earlier spoken to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling and offered help in all possible ways. (ANI)
