Tibbia College soon to be deemed university

The aged but esteemed Tibbia College marshalled for Ayurvedic and Unani medicines would soon acquire the status of University, announced Chief Minister Shiela Dixit at the inaugural function of the three-day National Conference of Ayurveda here on Wednesday.

Dixit during a visit to the college praised the college for its contribution in the field of Unani and Ayurvedic medicines and said college was unique in itself and deserve the varsity status. She directed the Principal Health secretary, Vivek Ray to take up the matter on a priority basis.

While inaugurating a 60-bed maternity ward and child block in the Tibbia college hospital, she pointed out, “the college has national importance because of its contribution in the field of Ayurvedic and Unani medicine and therefore deserves to be upgraded as a university.”

The Delhi government would provide full financial support to the college to led research and development work in exploring the ancient medicine systems to regain its glory.

Sheila Dixit also emphasised the need for integration of these two systems of medicine with Allopathy as all of these are supplementary to each other. She also pledged to open a national conference on “Shalya Ayurved Sambhasha-2008” to make aware the people to get advantage of the Ayurveda.

A big herbal park would come up in Ayurved Institute at Khera Dabar, which would take initiative in imparting Ayurvedic medical education from the next academic session as said by Dixit.

The Tibbia College was founded by the great patriot Hakim Azmal Khan during British rule. It offers four-and-half-years regular course of study followed by one-year internship and thereafter a student get eligible for the Bachelor degree from Delhi University in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S).

The college is being developed covering an area of 95 acres at an estimated cost of Rs102 crore. At present, the Ayurvedic College has 13 departments and a hospital facilitated with 110 beds. Students also get practical training in the college’s hospital.

More than 100 delegates and experts of Unani and Ayurvedic medicine from the entire country are participating in the seminar.
