Mild tremors were felt in parts of North and East India on Sunday evening (around 6.10 pm) after an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit Sikkim.
As per reports from various television channels, four people have been killed in Sikkim, state Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso informed and five people are reportedly dead in Nepal.
Several buildings have developed major cracks in Sikkim; however, the exact figure of casualty is yet to be confirmed.
With reports coming out from others parts of the affected areas, it has been reported that two persons were killed in Nalanda and Darbhanga districts of Bihar and one of them died as a result of stamped following tremors.
The epicentre of the quake is said to be just 68 kilometres North-West of Gangtok while it jolts several other cities including Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Patna, Lucknow and Guwahati among others.
Seismology official put the initial magnitude to 6.8. Two aftershocks of 6.1 and 5.3 were also felt in Sikkim. Even in the national capital region the tremor was very strong although for few seconds.
Following the Earthquake in Sikkim, the Government has despatched Two IAF Aircraft from Hindon to Bagdogra and one Aircraft each from Palam and Kolkata to Bagdogra with personnel of National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF).
With all equipment as immediate emergency relief measure they will be taken from Bagdogra to Gangtok by road which is being facilitated by BSF and West Bengal Government.
