New Delhi, Aug.23 (ANI): Former prime minister I.K. Gujaral on Tuesday came out in support of civil society activist and anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare, saying that had his health permitted, he would have come personally " to show my solidarity with this great cause."
In a letter written to Hazare, Gujral, who was the prime minister of the country from April 1997 to March 1998, said that he made a similar appeal to the people of India during his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort fourteen years ago."
"What a Prime Minister could not achieve, a humble Gandhian has managed to - that is the essence of this nation's progress," he added.
"This is a decisive time and, if our Parliament does not act now, history and posterity will not forgive us for squandering away our golden moment," Gujral said.
Expressing his deep appreciation for Hazare's singular effort in galvanizing the nation on the critical issue of fighting corruption, Gujral said this menace had spread to every organ of society like cancer.
"Thanks to your crusade, the common man is starting to feel empowered, and has come to realise that he can be an agent of change in our society," he added.
Recalling Mahatma Gandhi's uphill battle against the British Raj and the way it had caught the imagination of the people, Gujral said that Hazare's clarion call "has stirred our nation in a manner that is reminiscent of our independence struggle, when young and old, rich and poor selflessly dedicated themselves to the success of a movement that shaped our future."
