New Delhi, July 3(ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has condoled the passing away of former Union Minister Chaturanan Mishra.
In his condolence, Dr. Singh said: "All his life Shri Chaturanan Mishra remained passionately committed to the welfare of our people, especially those who are underprivileged. In his passing away we have a lost a freedom fighter, a distinguished parliamentarian and a dedicated trade union activist, who also served as the President of the All India Trade Union Congress."
"I mourn the sad demise of Shri Chaturanan Mishra and extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and admirers," he added.
Mishra breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Saturday following a prolonged illness.
A key leader of the Communist Party of India in Bihar, Mishra, 86, had served as the Agriculture Minister of India in the United Front Governments headed by H.D. Devegowda and I.K. Gujaral in 1996.
During Chaturanan Mishra's tenure as Union Agriculture Minister, there was a huge scam of importing rotten food grains.
He had also served as the national president of All India Trade Union Congress.
Mishra, who was born in Nahar village of Bihar's Madhubani District on April 7, 1925, also participated in the Quit India movement. (ANI)
