Uttarakhand Govt. issues red alert as heavy rains wreak havoc

Dehradun, July 1 (ANI): The Uttarakhand Government has issued a red alert with the arrival of the monsoons to counter the effect of floods and landslides in the region.

 

Addressing mediapersons here on Thursday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said: "For the past few days, it has been raining continuously and in fact, this time it has started a month in advance and we can foresee many difficulties."

 

"So, all the District Heads have been directed to keep a check on all the sensitive places of the state and hence a red alert has been issued in the state," he added.

 

A large number of pilgrims visiting the three shrines of Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri were stranded, due to road blockage caused by landslides and other reasons.

 

The Chief Minister advised the pilgrims to continue their pilgrimage.

 

"And that is why, everyone has been told to stay alert in the state. We are not stopping the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage has bee continuing and I would like to inform all the pilgrims in not to worry," said Nishank.

 

"It is likely that they might get stranded for a few hours, when the way is being cleared. However, they should bear these obstructions for a few hours and continue their pilgrimage," he added.

 

The Meteorological Department at Dehradun, has predicted that in the coming days, rain will lash several areas of the state. The towns that are likely to be affected by heavy rains are Nainital, Almora and Champawat. (ANI)
