Motor strike in Kerala disrupts normal life

Thiruvananthapuram , Fri, 20 May 2011 ANI

Thiruvananthapuram, May 20 (ANI): The dawn-to-dusk motor strike called by trade unions against petrol price hike disrupted normal life across the state on Friday.

The protest was called by Joint Coordination Committee of motor workers' unions, affiliated to central trade unions including pro-Congress INTUC.

Taxis and auto rickshaws kept off the road in most places, especially cities and towns.

Trucks and other commercial vehicles operating within the state are also on strike.

The unions rejected the plea of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to desist from strike in view of his government deciding to forgo the tax accruing to the state exchequer from the price increase.

Earlier, Chandy said: "The only thing which the state government can do is to forego the tax component of the increased fuel price. Accordingly the benefit to the consumers in Kerala will be of Rs. 1.22 on every litre of petrol." (ANI)
