India’s ace Discus thrower Neelam Jaswant Singh, who was banned for two years after failing a dope test in the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, will be soon back on track in the upcoming domestic season after the pronouncement of her reinstation by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) here on Tuesday.
According to an AFI statement, “Neelam has been re-instated to compete in the national and international competitions after completing the reinstatement mandatory testing stipulated in IAAF rule 40.12.”
The 2002 Busan Asian Games gold medallist Neelam tested positive for the prohibited stimulant Pemoline in Helsinki and served a ban from August 2005. Neelam had also won bronze at the Bangkok Asian Games in1998, besides winning silver in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and three Asian Championship medals.
Neelam, 37, challenged against her ban in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), on the ground of procedural irregularities related to tests and reports, but eventually lost the case.
Neelam’s ban finished on August 11, 2007 but she had to hang around, as IAAF anti-doping rules necessitate an athlete to undergo a minimum of three out-of-competition tests with at least three months gap between the tests and one in-competition that involves a full-fledged test of prohibited substances, just prior to the culmination of the banning period, before anyone is allowed to participate in any competition.
