2G scam: Attorney General, CBI Director, Law Secretary to appear before PAC

New Delhi , Fri, 15 Apr 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 15 (ANI): Attorney General G E Vahanvati, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director AP Singh and Law Secretary DR Meena are expected to depose before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament chaired by Murli Manohar Joshi, which is probing the 2G spectrum scam, on Friday.

According to reports, the PAC is likely to quiz Vahanvati about the legal opinions he may have given to the Telecom Ministry when he was the Solicitor-General in UPA-I. He has been made a witness by CBI in its chargesheet filed before the special court in the 2G scam.

The CBI had questioned Vahanvati earlier on March 16 in connection with 2G spectrum scam.

The questioning came after CBI got hold of some documents that indicates that former Telecom Minister A Raja had sought legal opinion on the issue of licences of Vahanvati, the then Solicitor General.

Vahanvati, however, told the Supreme Court on March 3 that he did not give any legal opinion to the then Telecom Minister A Raja and his Ministry.

CBI Director Singh had deposed before the Parliamentary Committee earlier on February 15, when he said that it was wrong to say that the 2G spectrum allocation had caused zero loss to the national exchequer.

The CBI director has also had a separate meeting with PAC chairman Murli Manohar Joshi in March.

This appearance would be after the CBI has filed a charge sheet against some of the main accused.

Former Telecom Minister A Raja, former Telecom Secretary Siddhartha Behura, Raja"s personal secretary R K Chandolia and Swan Telecom Promoter Shahid Usman Balwa are already in judicial custody and have been supplied with the copy of the chargesheet.

All the accused have been booked under sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 109 (abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence, and where no express provision is made for its punishment) of the Indian Penal Code.

Raja was forced to resign from the Union Cabinet last year after the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) faulted him for undervaluing spectrum to favour companies who were largely ineligible for 2G spectrum, and added that the government had probably lost Rs.1.76 lakh crore in estimated revenue.
