Surbhi Kapoor a 20-year-old girl aspiring for airhostess met with death at her residence in Rajdhani Enclave, Saraswati Vihar in north-west Delhi, when she resisted a robbery attempt by a long-term employee of her father early on Thursday.

The accused, Pawan Kumar (32), was caught by family members when he was trying to escape the house after sending Surbhi at the mouth of death. In his attempt to capture the accused her parents Seema and Dinesh Kapoor also got injured.

Surabhi Kapoor was sleeping in the first floor of her house at around 3.45 am when her uncle Aneesh Kapoor’s employee, Pawan, (32) who was working as an operator at the Kapoor’s cable TV service for the 12 long years scaled the walls of the house with a ladder and barged into her room.

Surbhi heard the noise and woke up when he was robbing valuables from the room, the police said.

"When the victim tried to protest, Pawan first stabbed her with a knife and then bludgeoned her to death with a hammer," a senior police official said.

An officer said that Surbhi’s parents, who slept in the adjacent room, did not hear anything while the crime was being committed and Kumar took his time to kill the girl.

However, the noise from the pump woke up the mother who came out of the room to investigate. She saw a shadow rushing down the stairs. She tried to accost him but was beaten up. Meanwhile Surbhi’s father woke too up and stepped out of the room but was also attacked by Kumar. Amidst the fighting other members in the house Aneesh and Rakesh, the victim’s uncle had come out of their rooms and caught Pawan Kumar, who relinquished his struggle after realizing the family had recognised him. Pawan was handed over to the police, who also collected the weapon used in the crime. The forensic expert also called at the spot, which had collected evidence.

Surabhi was then rushed to the nearby Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, but of no avail. Doctors declared her dead. She had bled heavily from her head and lower chest. The body has been sent to a government hospital for autopsy.

A senior police official said, "The accused in his interrogation revealed that he had only entered the house with the sole purpose of robbery as he was aware that the girl's father had received some cash through bill collections.”

"Pawan disclosed that he had alone hatched the conspiracy but his plans went awry when Surabhi woke up. Pawan said he had to eliminate her to conceal his identity, but the victim's loud screams alerted her family members," the official added.

Rakesh Kapoor, victim’s uncle said Pawan had been working for 12 long years and had won their faith but now after the incident it is difficult for them to trust strangers. He added, “We are completely shocked. If he needed money, he could ask to us.”

Police sources have discard robbery as the motive. There was no evidence in the house that suggested theft. We are also investigating the crime with different angle, police added.
