Minority reservation: may or may not be

New Delhi, Thu, 17 Jan 2008 Binita Tiwari

Shivraj Patil, Union Home Minister has given an indication of reservation to minorities in educational institutions and jobs on Wednesday during State Minorities Conference.

In his inaugural speech while referring to the reservation given to minorities he said, “We cannot say it cannot be done.”

“We have to apply our minds to find out how it can be done in the best possible manner. We are looking into the matter but have not come to a conclusion as yet,” he added.

But Union Home Minister, Arjun Singh after meeting of National Monitoring committee for Minority Education gave reservation issues an ambiguity when he said, “Lots of issue are to be considered.”

Taking the same route to root the uprooted

Even, implementing OBC quota in centrally run educational institute has been unsuccessful, as the matter is with Supreme Court which wants it to reconsider several of its recommendation including the exclusion of creamy layer from reservation benefits.

In addition to that our constitution does have provision to allow reservation in the name of religion. The basic structure of our constitution will have to undergo surgery if anyhow the government wants the reservation for minorities.

The general trend to look to reservation in educational institution and job as a form of Affirmative Action has led to tendency towards the neglect or lack of emphasis towards problem which affects more.

After the Sachar Committee report that threw light on the socio-economic plight of Muslims and the diverse challenges faced by this community has sent a message to political galleries to address the same.

Time to come will tell the various kink of reservation to minorities as it is reported that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would watch over Sachar Committee report.

But amidst all these there is a need to take futuristic review of Indian society, the makers of our constitution envisaged this policy and gave it a time frame so that reservation can be averted later after fulfilling the motive to bring depressed class to the mainstream. The classless and casteless society was the centre of the purpose of reservation. When there is a need to take deep insight into the follies of reservation which has not able to bridge the gap, taking the same route to root the uprooted minorities seems to be arguable.
