83rd Oscar Awards announced, Indians' despair

The reputed 83rd Academy Awards has been announced leaving despair for Indians who were expecting to replicate the magic of Slumdog Millionaire and Smile Pinki in the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. In the 81st Academy Awards, foremost music director A R Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and music technician Resul Pookutty had won the Oscar honours for Best original song 'Jai Ho' of Slumdog Millionaire, Best Original Score and Best Sound Mixing for the same film.

Smile Pinki, selected for Best Documentary Short Category, was however made by American Director Megan Mylan but was based on Indian background and in Hindi and Bhojpuri language.

This time A R Rahman who was nominated for Best Song "If I rise" from 127 hours and Best Original score for the same movie could not be able to grab any award. These awards went to Randy Newman for the song "We belong together" of Toy story 3 and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Social Network respectively.

Besides Rahman, a Non-Resident Indian Tariq Anwar was also failed to bag the Best Film Editing trophy for the British drama The King's Speech. Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter for The Social Network won it.

As per decided schedule, the 83rd Academy award commonly known as Oscar Awards was held on 27th February 2011 at Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California to honour the best films of 2010.

The King's Speech and Inception, each won the four awards while The Social Network grabbed three.

Alice in Wonderland, The Fighter and Toy Story 3 each could manage to win two awards.

The King's Speech, nominated the most 12 categories could mark the four top honours including Best Picture, Best Director (Tom Hooper), Best Actor (Colin Firth) and Best Writing - Original Screenplay (David Seidler).

Inception, nominated for eight categories could also manage to bag four awards - Best Sound Editing (Richard King), Best Sound Mixing (Lora Hirschberg, Gary A. Rizzo, and Ed Novick) Best Cinematography (Wally Pfister) and Best Visual Effects (Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley, and Peter Bebb).

Natalie Portman grabbed the Best Supporting Actress Awards for Black Swan. She was in the character of Nina Sayers / The Swan Queen.

Christian Bale won the Best Supporting Actor award for The Fighter while Melissa Leo could grab the honour of Best Supporting Actress awards for the same film.

Animation movie and hot favourite Alice in Wonderland could able to mark only two honours - Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design awards.

Toy Story 3 (Lee Unkrich) won the Best Animation Feature award. It was the highest grossing film of 2010.

But, much awaited Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 could not win even a single award despite getting nomination in two categories - Best Visual Effect and Best Art Direction.
