New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) The Delhi government has ordered demolition of a dilapidated school building in the city's north-west after it was declared "dangerous", an official said on Tuesday.

Several other school buildings have been vacated and may be demolished to pave way for construction of much-needed new buildings for the students, said Arunodaya Prakash, media advisor to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

The order was issued on Monday at a meeting of officials chaired by Sisodia.

Constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD), Kanjhawala Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in north-west Delhi was declared "dangerous" in 2004 after cracks started developing less than two years after it was built.

The government on Monday ordered the demolition of the school building, noting that it posed "great risk" to another building in the vicinity.

Five other schools in Delhi were also declared dangerous between 2006-2016. These were the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Shahbad Dairy, Updesh Kaur Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Dariyapur Kalan, Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Jahangirpuri, Government Girls Secondary School in Bhalaswa Dairy, and Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Pul Bangash.

While issuing the orders, the government noted that the demolition of these buildings will pave the way for construction of new school buildings.
