Delhi Police Economic Offence Wing Initiative of Cyber Crime Cell

As a special initiative, a 2 week internship with hands-on training about the usage of various Cyber Forensic tools was organized by the Cyber Crime Cell, Economic Offense Wing (EOW) , Delhi Police 2014 for the Post Graduate students of Cyber Security from Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice, Jodhpur.

The said initiative was taken up to address the needs of trained professionals in the field of Cyber Crime, Security and Forensics. As a part of the Internship Program, 12 students from the University, were given a practical exposure about various aspects of cyber crime investigations and cyber forensics. During the Internship Program, the senior Investigating Officers shared their experiences in investigating various cases of hacking, data theft, crimes of persuasion, credit card, e-banking frauds, extortion, stalking and fake profiling. A Special session was also organized to provide them exposure to Trojans, virus, key loggers, malwares, spywares and steganography. Besides the cyber crime case studies, cases of Intellectual Property Rights as well as the issues involved in the prosecution under the amended Information Technology Act 2000 were also discussed.

The students were also provided with extended hand-on training about the usage of various equipment and software in the Cyber Forensic Lab, EOW. The students learned the procedures adopted while making disk to disk images of hard disks, optical drives, pen drives as well as various mobile phones on equipments like Logicube Forensic Dossier, Logicube Talon and FREDDIE. Further, various nuances in the extraction of deleted data and analysis of the imaged data was also taught to the students on the forensic workstations in the lab. The students were given extensive training regarding various aspects of Cyber Forensic analysis on the software tools available in the Lab including Access Data Toolkit, Encase and NUIX. They were also exposed to a practical session of tracking hackers of website.

The students were also taken on a field trip to the data center of National Informatics Center, from where all the government websites are hosted. They were also explained about various features available in Crime & Criminal Tracking Network & systems, Delhi Police Dossier system, Delhi Police ZIPNET, Delhi Police PCR Control Room and Delhi Police Finger Print System through interaction sessions at the PCR & C4i Control Rooms and the CCTNS Training Center.

In the near future, more internship programs are being planned for the students of Cyber Security and Forensic students from various Universities of India.
