Delhi: 4.15 lakhs more people were added to the food security net

After scrutiny and field verification of the applications received under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, the Department of Food, Supplies & Consumer Affairs has started adding new people to the food security net. Giving information, the Commissioner (Food & Supplies) Shri S.S. Yadav said that from the month of July, 2013, the department has included 4,15,422 persons belonging to 1.20 lakhs households for providing food security benefits. These households will be issued new ration cards starting from 1st July, 2014, which will be dispatched to them by speed post. As per the Act, the household is to be headed by the eldest female of the house. Where no female above 18 years is there in any household, it can be headed by the eldest male member.

Shri Yadav informed that in 1.20 lakhs households being issued new ration cards, 1,75,510 households are headed by females while males are the head of family in 2,476 households. In 14 households, the family is headed by a transgender.

He said that Delhi became the first State to launch food security in August, 2013. 32.39 lakhs people were included under the food security and started getting benefits from 1st September, 2013. Now the department has added 4.15 lakhs more people to the food security net. The department plans to add about 10 lakh persons every month till it reaches the target of 72.78 lakhs.

Shri Yadav informed that the department has received applications from 15 lakhs households under the Act. All the applications have been digitized. The department has deployed over 1400 people for field verification of the applicants. Field verification of 14 lakhs families has been done. The test checking of these families and feeding of verification reports in the computer system is going on. The eligible households are entitled to receive foodgrains at highly subsidized rates of Rs. 2 per kg for wheat and Rs. 3 per kg for rice.
