NHRC notice to Chhattisgarh over boycott of tribal families

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) The NHRC Friday issued notice to the Chhattisgarh government for having failed to act on a complaint by two tribal families over alleged social boycott in their village.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notice to the chief secretary and the director general of police, Chhattisgarh and asked for a detailed report within four weeks.

According to the NHRC, the two families living in village Dhaurabatha are being boycotted for the past 14 months following a diktat of the Ghunghutti Rampur panchayat in the Korba district.

"Nobody talks to them; they are prevented from grazing their cattle; they cannot shop in the village; and their children cannot go to the anganwadi centre," the commission said in a statement.

"The police did not take any action and instead levelled allegations against the affected families after a visit April 15," it added, citing a media report.

"The commission has observed the contents of the press report, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of these tribal people," it said further.

One family is being boycotted since Feb 25, 2013 after it failed to pay a fine of Rs.10,000 for allegedly abusing the sarpanch while the other family was punished for talking to the shunned family against the panchayat diktat.
