Three dead, 504 incidents of poll-related violence in Bengal

Kolkata, April 19 (IANS) Three people were killed in the 504 incidents of pre-poll violence recorded in West Bengal since the March 5 announcement of Lok Sabha elections, an official said Saturday.

"As many as 443 were injured during this phase," Amit Roy Chowdhury, officer on special duty in the state poll panel, told reporters here.

Damage to property amounted to Rs.2.69 lakh.

Roy Chowdhury said 13,280 vulnerable hamlets have been identified and 12,085 people earmarked as potential trouble-makers while 52,981 non-bailable warrants executed across the state.

He said 207.1 kg of explosives, 2,971 cartridges, 1,116 illegal arms and 5,665 bombs have been seized so far.

"As many as 176 arms licenses have been cancelled and four illegal arms manufacturing centre were raided," he added.

The Commission has received around 652 complaints. In terms of grievances registered by political parties, the Communist Party of India (CPI-M) has lodged the highest number of complaints at 298 and the poll panel has disposed off 235 of them.

For the fourth phase of the polls May 7 for six Lok Sabha seats, 79 nominations have been filed till Saturday, the last day, while for the fifth phase, 46 candidates have filed nominations for 17 seats that go to the hustings May 12.
