Yavatmal , Thu, 20 Mar 2014 ANI

Yavatmal ( Maharashtra), Mar 20, (ANI) : Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi today called for rehashing the Indian agricultural system in its entirety and called for an end to farmers committing suicides.

"Because of suicides, families are ravaged because of it. It's not just the peasants but also their kins following the same route. This is not just a political issue, it is about the nation to decide the pain of these peasants," Modi said.

"A system has to be created so that the poor peasants do not die just like that and I extend my grief to those families of those victims who have lost their dear ones. A family passing through trying times gets involved with me then I gain strength to fight for them. Your pain and your grief will propel me to do good and it won't let me take rest until I accomplish it, " Modi added.

To a question posed by the farmer on improving the conditions of the cotton and soyabean farmers Modi said.

"Soyabean is an important crop as to can do away with poverty as raised by the Prime Minister who once rued for people going hungry. Soyabean producers can profit a lot as it is used in pharmaceuticals and also it is exported as well. Also for the cotton producers he suggested the place which produces cotton yarns should have factories to produce cloth and help export. The more we do this then the farmers will benefit a lot," Modi said.

"Tons of vegetables gets destroyed because rodents feed on them because of lack of storage. The produce of the farmers goes into waste instead of being utilized. This shows how irresponsible the government is. The problem with the government is that it does not have real time date on the produce. With help of science and technology we can reduce such loss," Modi added.

Modi also called for a dedicated department for the goods train so that the produce of the farmers becomes a top priority and that it reaches on time in contrast to transporting granites.

"The problems with the governments are that they think farmers will be able to fend for themselves, it is for the government to see that the problems of the farmers were ameliorated. The priority should be to increase the produce of every hectare. If the quality of soil is improved the produce will be more hence our focus should be dwelling on that," Modi said.

Modi said agricultural universities have a large role that they play. Hence we must bridge the farmers and the universities. We must create an atmosphere in that direction so that the farmers could attend agricultural universities and wanted them to have call centres in agricultural universities, so that the farmers can get benefitted when they ask their queries to the scientists and get ready made solutions easily.

"Global market should be our target, so that we must produce enough which could export our produce and lead to balanced growth," Modi said.

He called for building more agricultural universities and colleges and introduce short term courses separately for women as they play a major role as well as he asked to build model farms and then show the farmers themselves through their eyes so that the farmers can take risks and within a matter of 4 years they can increase the produce.
