Srinagar, Feb.22 (ANI): Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) staff on Saturday in Srinagar staged a protest against the state government and demanded regularisation of jobs.
The employees said that the daily wagers should be made permanent.
Hundreds of non-regular employees marched from their office towards the Press Enclave area shouting slogans.
General Secretary of Public Health Engineering Department Employees Union, Sajad Ahmed Parray said their demands were genuine and the government should agree to them.
"Our demand is that the government should fulfil our genuine demands and they should make us permanent employees from daily wagers. Public Health and Engineering employees Union chief was promised in a meeting on June 8, 2013 and those promises should be fulfilled. Since 1994 to November 2005, all daily wagers should be made permanent. After November 2005 all the casual workers should also be regularised," said Ahmed.
He also appealed the government to solve the issues related to PHE employees failing which they would call for state-wide protest.
Reportedly, in 2010, the state government had appointed hundreds of youths on contractual basis in a specific employment scheme. Since their joining, the youths were drawing a low salary that did not meet their needs.
Around 18 government departments in Srinagar had recruited these youths for a term of two years that got over recently and there have been no talks about the contract's renewal. (ANI)
