Animal heart beat capable of powering pacemakers

Washington, Tue, 21 Jan 2014 ANI

Washington, Jan. 21 (ANI): Beating animal hearts can supply power to run pacemakers and other medical devices by attaching a strip of piezoelectric nanoribbons onto them, researchers at the University of Illinois-Champaign reportedly claimed.

Piezoelectric nanoribbons are power generating materials, capable of converting an animal's heart movement into electrical pulses.

A thin strip of piezoelectric power generators is enough to yield power to charge medical devices, Cnet reported.

Researchers said that they have come up with a complete and integrated system that is capable of harvesting and storing energy from the natural contractile and relaxation motions of the heart, lung, and diaphragm at levels that meet requirements for practical applications. (ANI)
