Facebook to add one billion users' profile photos into a facial recognition database

Wellington, Fri, 30 Aug 2013 NI Wire

In a bid to provide ambit of facilities to its users, social media giant, Facebook, is planning to incorporate profile photographs of more than one billion users into a facial recognition database in an effort to improve its 'Tag Suggest' feature.

According to Facebook Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) Erin Egan, the upgraded data policy of adding members' public profile photos will offer users better control over their personal information by making it easier to identify posted photos in which they appear, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Highlighting the features, she further added that Facebook users will even be able to "opt out" of the Tag Suggest feature altogether, if they don't like it, and the person's public profile photo would not be included in the facial recognition database.

According to the report, tag feature will use facial recognition technology to speed up the process of tagging friends and acquaintances appearing in photos posted on the network.

The technology currently automatically identifies faces in newly uploaded photos by comparing them only to previous snapshots in which users were tagged.

Facial recognition technology has been a sensitive issue for technology companies, raising concerns among some privacy advocates and government officials.
