The results of assembly elections which have been displaying in three north east states, clearly showing that Left is all set to return in power in Tripura. The assembly polls will decide the electoral fate of 345 contestants, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and State Congress President D.D. Lapang.
The ruling CPI-M led Left Front has taken an early lead over Congress in Tripura as it is leading in 29 seats. In Nagaland, the ruling Naga People's Front is now leading in 13 seats, Congress in three, JD(U) and Others leading in one each. In Meghalaya. Congress is leading in nine seats in comparison to United Democratic Party's five.
The counting of votes began in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland amidst tight security today.
The Congress has fielded its candidates in all the 60 seats in Meghalaya, and ally United Democratic Party in 50. The P.A. Sangma-led National Peoples Party is contesting in 32 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 13 and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 21 seats.
A total of 188 candidates are in the fray for the Nagaland assembly elections including Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie, Opposition Leader Tokheho Yepthomi, Congress president SI Jamir and former Home Minister Imkong L Imchen. The ruling Naga People's Front is the only party contesting all the 60 seats.
It is noted that the Assembly elections in the three states, having 60 seats each, were held on February 14 and February 23. Tripura witnessed a massive turnout of voters on Thursday, as above 90 percent of voting was recorded at the end of the polling for the 60 seats of the state assembly.
