75 percent voter turnout in second phase of Chhattisgarh polls

New Delhi, Nov.19 (ANI): The Election Commission (EC) said on Tuesday said that the second phase of the two-phased polls in Chhattisgarh witnessed a voter turnout of 74.70 percent in these 72 constituencies, and added that the voter turnout was very impressive and the highest ever so far.

"The poll turnout comes to 74.70 percent in these 72 constituencies. This is a tentative figure as per the information available at this stage. For these constituencies the 2008 polling percentage was 71.09. The phase one of Chhattisgarh the polling percentage was finally 75.53. Put together, we can conclude that the voter turnout was very impressive and the highest ever so far," Deputy Election Commissioner R. Balakrishnan told media here today.

He further said that in the phase two polls, there were some districts, which were adjoining Naxal affected districts of Chhattisgarh, and also Naxal affected areas of the neighbouring states.

He also said that though the polling process was very peaceful, one incident occurred in Bemetara district, where one person died and two were injured in a scuffle with security personnels.

"Poll took place between 8am to 5pm, and it was very peaceful. An incident took place at the Saja assembly constituency in Bemetara district, one person died and two were injured in a firing incident involving a scuffle between security personnel and some individuals. A detailed report has been called for by the Chief Electoral officers," he added.

Earlier on November 11, the first phase of polls were held for 18 assembly constituencies spread over eight districts in the state.

The results of the Chhattisgarh elections, along with those in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi, will be declared on December 8. (ANI)
