DGCA to investigate near-miss at IGI airport

New Delhi,Defence/Security, Thu, 03 Oct 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) The aviation safety regulator Thursday initiated an inquiry into procedural lapses that could have caused a collision between a passenger aircraft and an Indian Air Force plane at the IGI airport here.

According to a senior official with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), an investigation has been ordered into the incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon around 2.30 p.m.

The official said the investigation will look into the incident in which a Go Air's Airbus A320 aircraft was taking off for Mumbai and saw an Indian Air Force plane crossing the same runway.

The IAF plane which landed from Chandigarh was crossing the same runway to reach the technical area.

The collision between the two aircraft was averted, when air traffic control (ATC) asked the Go Air pilot to abort the take-off and reduce speed.

The DGCA added that it is unclear at this juncture whether the passenger or IAF aircraft received proper instructions from the ATC or not.
