We need to captivate, capture minority voters imagination: BJP

New Delhi , Sun, 18 Aug 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Aug. 18 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Sunday that its office bearers and campaign committee representatives discussed measures to be taken up in the lead-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, and added that the party is looking to establish itself in new regions and to attract minority voters to its cause.

"So far as the minority vote share is concerned, Mr. Modi cited his own example of Gujarat, that there are about a 160 minority candidates who are representing Gujarat in various local bodies. So, he insisted on that-that several minority voters are inclined towards the BJP, and we need to captivate those voters and capture their imagination. We need to work with them and give them due respect and due position across the country," BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said.

Lekhi further said the BJP has set itself a target of gaining 272 seats in the 2014 elections, and that the meeting discussed ways to improve on past poll results.

"Every party will set a target for itself and we have set the target of 272 plus for ourselves. While setting this target, we have studied the past performance. In that, in 2009, we also studied that we were in position one and position two in several seats across the country. There were 56 seats where we lost with the margin of difference in vote share was less than 50,000. There are about 100 such seats where the difference is about 1 lakh to about 1.5 lakh. So, obviously, these are the areas where we can work and put everything together and achieve our target," she explained.

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the meeting aimed at measures to be taken to attract new voters and how to establish the party base in new regions.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who leads the Campaign Committee, embarked on the BJP's election campaign last week in Hyderabad.

The BJP meeting of spokespersons and office bearers from across the country was convened to chalk out a strategy for the upcoming state and general elections. (ANI)
