Assam , Wed, 03 Jul 2013 ANI

Assam, July 3 (ANI): A group of poachers killed a rhino and took away its horn in Kaziranga National Park, which is home to two-third of the world's great one-horned rhinoceroses.

The incident came to light on Tuesday, after forest officials heard about seven gunshots, early in the morning.

Updating the media about of this poaching incident, Divisional Forest Officer, S K Sharma said that search operations are going on to arrest the poachers.

"This is a hilly area; our staff is cordoning the area, search is going on and we are expecting that poachers have not escaped the area. The search is going on and we will be able to tell details afterwards," said Sharma.

According to the Game Warden of this sanctuary, more than 10 rhinos have been killed since January this year.

There were 2,329 rhinos in the park, according to the latest census, and in the last four months, 11 incidents took place inside the Kaziranga National Park and poachers killed around 16 one-horned rhinos.

To protect the one-horned rhino, wildlife authorities in Assam have deployed armed guards, but they have proved ineffective before the organised gangs of poachers, who continue to kill the rhinos. (ANI)
