Ambala, Tue, 07 May 2013 ANI

Ambala (Haryana), May 7 (ANI): Raging fire engulfed a chemical factory in Ambala, burning the houses in its vicinity and injuring a rescue worker, while the fire fighters struggled to douse the inferno.

Residents of the area, saw smoke coming out from the factory and all of a sudden the whole factory was ablaze.

District commissioner, Ambala, Shekhar Vidyarthi said that they had sought the assistance of the air force and the army to douse the inferno.

"The owner is absconding as soon as the fire started. He left his car here and ran away and around 10 to 12 fire tenders have arrived at the scene even from other areas and we are being assisted by the army and air force. Foam is sprayed on such fires, as water cannot douse the flames. A lot of explosive material has been removed with the help of army, air force, police and volunteers. Right now it seems that it has been brought under control but let's see," Vidyarthi said.

The fire fighters struggled to douse the flames, as there were drums full of chemicals and the fire spread to houses near to the factory.

The volunteers and the locals rushed an injured rescue worker to an ambulance.

A resident, Shyam Kumar said, "There were only three fire tenders that had reached the spot to douse the flames."

He further added, "A few houses in the village have caught fire and the situation is still not under control. Only three fire tenders have come and we have asked for more fire tenders but they are not coming."

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and there were no reports of any casualty.

The extent of damage is yet to be determined.

Fires in factories are fairly common, as safety regulations are not strictly enforced.

In most industries and residential dwellings across India, fire safety regulations are lax, rarely implemented and not periodically reviewed, which results in the breaking of major fires, resulting in loss of life and material. (ANI)
