Woodcarving creating job opportunities for Sikkim youth

Gangtok (Sikkim), May 1 (ANI): Woodcarving gaining popularity in Sikkim as it is creating job opportunities and helping to preserve and promote an ethnic art of of the region.

"We are trying to preserve this traditional art of Sikkim. The young generation is very keen in learning this art, and the Government of Sikkim and our institute is making full efforts to train them. They are keen to seek admission here," said sketch instructor, Palden Bhutia.

A mask instructor, Duduk Bhutia, said that after being trained, the students can become self-reliant.

Apart from its natural beauty, Sikkim is also known for its art and craft. The state government is trying to keep alive this rich legacy by providing woodcarving to the youth so that their skills can be enhanced.

"When I came here I did not knew painting and drawing, but after three years, now I am in my fourth year, and I know painting. I want to do it well. After the training, I want to become self- reliant," said Sonam Rapden, a student.

To give a boost to Sikkim's cottage art and craft of Sikkim, the Directorate of Handloom and Handicraft is imparting training in traditional art of woodcarving and painting to the youth.

An institute in the state has taken up the initiative to train individuals in woodcarving.

It offers a three-year woodcarving course with comprehensive training in the art of mask carving as well as other woodcrafts of traditional designs.

The programme is open to unemployed talented youth and crafts persons of the state and enabled them to explore their potential and earn their livelihood as well.

The students are also provided training in mask paintings, Thangka paintings.
