Lahore/Jalandhar/New Delhi/Ajmer, April 28 (ANI): The brutal attack on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh lodged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail by six inmates, has sparked off a debate on both sides of the subcontinental divide, and is capable of inflaming tensions between the two nations.
Sarabjit's counsel Owais Sheikh said his client's health is serious and described the attack on him as very disturbing.
"As this case is connected to the relations between India and Pakistan, I would pray that God saves Sarabjit Singh," Sheikh said in Lahore.
Sarabjit's daughter Poonam Kaur said in Jalandhar that the Indian Government needed to provide visas to the family immediately, so that they could go to Pakistan to look after him.
In New Delhi, BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the safety of Indian prisoners in Pakistan has now become a matter of grave concern.
He said that Indian Government needs to react firmly and strongly to the attack on Sarabjit, and demand an immediate explanation from the Pakistan Government.
Minister of State for Home Kunwar Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh also condemned the incident, but defenced the government by saying New Delhi had taken up the issue with Islamabad to condone the attack on Sarabjit Singh, a death row inmate.
"The government has been trying to ensure that Sarabjit Singh was freed. We condemn this treatment meted out to him," he said, while adding that it was the Pakistan Government's responsibility to ensure the safety of the prisoner.(ANI)
