New Delhi, April 21 (ANI): Vice President Hamid Ansari, on Sunday convened an all-party meet to ensure the smooth functioning of the house during the second half of the budget session of parliament that commences from Monday.

Ansari presided over the meeting, which was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader of Arun Jaitley and other senior political leaders in New Delhi.

Junior Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajeev Shukla said, "The (Rajya Sabha) chairman has taken the initiative to ensure the smooth functioning of the house. People (politicians) have given many suggestions. It was forum to seek people's opinion."

The session, which begins tomorrow, is likely to be a stormy one in the wake of Law and Justice Minister Ashwani Kumar allegedly trying to influence the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report on the coal allocation scam and the leaked JPC report on the 2G spectrum scam exonerating both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, with the blame being squarely put on former telecom minister A.Raja. Disruptions are also expected over the government's inability to prevent the rise in rapes of women and children across the country.

"If the government makes a reply in the house on the issue then there would be no disruption. It also depends upon the government's response whether the disruption will take place or not," said Sitaram Yechury, senior leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM).

The regional political parties refused the government's suggestion to defer live telecast of the house's proceedings to ensure that expunged material is not aired.

Meanwhile, lawmaker of the regional pro-Hindu Shiv Sena (SS), Sanjay Raut said, "We have suggested that there would be no uproar. The house will function, we are in democracy, and you can't suppress our voice or media's voice or discontinue telecast (of the house's proceeding)."

Law Minister Kumar met the Director of CBI, Ranjit Sinha, asking for changes in the agency's report on illegal coalfields allocation to private firms between 2006 and 2009 that it was to submit to the Supreme Court.

The scam reached the doorsteps of the ruling Congress party because Prime Minister Singh headed the Coal Ministry between 2006 and 2009.

Singh had denied any wrongdoing and pointed out that it was his government that proposed competitive bidding.

The government has been embroiled in a series of scams, leading to repeated disruptions of parliament.

During the almost month-long session, the goverment will try its best to pass the important legislations pending in Parliament. These mainly include Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, Food Security Bill and Land Acquisition Bill besides the Finance Bill and vote on several demands for grants.(ANI)
