Bengal's education system threatened in Trinamool rule: CPI-M

Kolkata,Politics, Fri, 12 Apr 2013 IANS

Kolkata, April 12 (IANS) Condemning the vandalism at Presidency University by the students wing of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress, the opposition CPI-M Friday alleged that the state's education system was being threatened under the current dispensation.

"If such is the condition of Presidency, imagine the condition of primary schools in the state," Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Surjya Kanta Mishra said here.

Armed with sticks and rods, Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad members stormed the Presidency University campus Wednesday. They vandalised its famous physics department and assaulted students, including women.

The miscreants ransacked the century-old Baker Building that houses the physics laboratory where eminent scientists like Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha conducted research.

"Under the Trinamool Congress rule, the whole education system is under threat," alleged Mishra, who is also leader of opposition in the state assembly.

He also took a dig at the Trinamool Congress and its secretary general Partha Chatterjee for describing the vandalism at the varsity as a "trivial" matter.
