Trinamool holds protest in Delhi

New Delhi,Politics, Wed, 10 Apr 2013 IANS

New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress party members Wednesday held a protest here to condemn the treatment meted out to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra by SFI activists.

Led by Trinamool leader Mukul Roy, party members gathered at Jantar Mantar and shouted slogans against the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students arm of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

"It was a pre-planned assault by the CPI-M. Student leader (Sudipto Gupta) was not murdered by Trinamool Congress activists and a probe is still on," Roy told reporters.

He denied that party members went on rampage in West Bengal.

"We are holding peaceful protests in West Bengal. We are appealing for peace and no untoward incident has happened in the state, that I can assure you with authority," Roy added.

He said that some stray incidents may have happened but there has been no casualty and no injury to anyone.

Banerjee and Mitra faced noisy protests outside the Planning Commission office in the national capital Tuesday, over SFI leader Sudipto Gupta's death in Kolkata.

After the incident, the chief minister cancelled her meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, citing ill health, while Mitra was hospitalised after he complained of chest pain.
