Skill development must for success of JNNURM: Kamal Nath

New Delhi , Wed, 10 Apr 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Apr. 10 (ANI): Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath on Wednesday said that there is a huge shortage of skilled manpower in the country resulting in slow progress of Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) projects in some states.

Nath, who was delivering his keynote address at 'RICS International Conference 2013' here, said JNNURM was launched by the Government of India on December 3, 2005, envisaging an investment of more than Rs. 1,00,000 crore.

"It is a reform-driven, fast track programme to ensure planned development of identified cities with focus on efficiency in urban infrastructure and service delivery mechanisms. But lack of professionalism has affected successful implementation of the scheme in some states," he added.

Nath said India's growth momentum is continuing and investment in the infrastructure sector has grown phenomenally.

"Yet the challenges are profound. There are some constraints like land prices, anomalies in Floor Area Ratio (FAR) in smaller cities, archaic laws etc that hinder the growth," he said.

Nath said the government is seized of the matter and is doing everything possible in supporting a better-built environment.

"Public Private Partnership (PPP) model has been adopted in giving shape to many projects to trigger growth," he added.

Nath further said efficient land economics, regulatory reforms and India-specific best practices are important to make India a global real estate destination.

Dr. Sudhir Krishna, Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, also spoke on this occasion. (ANI)
