Tamil Nadu gives major thrust to pre-fab technology

Chennai, April 4 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Thursday announced a slew of housing projects across the state including an integrated satellite township in Madurai and construction of multi-storied apartments near here using pre-fab technology.

Announcing this in the state assembly, Jayalalithaa said: "A satellite township, 15 km from Madurai, will be developed on the Madurai-Tirunevelli four-lane highway. The township will have 19,500 plots out of which 14,300 will be for low income group, 2,500 plots for middle income group, 750 plots for high income group and 1,950 plots for economically weaker sections."

She said the township will come up on 586.86 acres at an outlay of Rs.120 crore and will be built out of funds from the Tamil Nadu Housing Board.

In a major boost to the pre-fab technology, Jayalalithaa said the government will build 1,500 apartments for low/middle/high income groups at an outlay of around Rs.612 crore using that technology.

She said the use of pre-fab building technology would save 25 percent construction time and 10-15 percent in construction cost.

Jayalalithaa said 1,630 individual houses and 2,792 apartments will be built under self-financing scheme at an outlay of around Rs.918 crore on the land belonging to Tamil Nadu Housing Board in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Coimbatore, Erode, Krishnagiri, Salem, Virudhunagar, Dindugal and Tiruchirapalli.

Jayalalithaa also announced construction of 844 apartments at seven locations in and around Chennai at a cost of Rs.371 crore and 3,610 apartments/individual houses in several towns in the state.

She said the government will also demolish 3,500 apartments that are in a bad condition at various places and build a new one at an outlay of Rs.280 crore.
