Guwahati, Mar 29 (ANI): In an endeavour to promote and preserve Assamese culture and traditions, a ten-day long Bihu dance training camp was organized in Guwahati.
The Bihu dance not only attracted the youth from Assam, but also others from other northeastern states, including Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland.
Organised by the Ministry of External Affairs in association with the Indian Council For Cultural Relations, Northeast Zone Cultural and the Assam Sanskrit Mancha, the ten-day workshop dealt with the intricacies of the traditional Bihu dance. This was the fourth edition of the training camp.
"We find the roots of Bihu Dance in rural areas. We have invited boys and girls from villages to impart Bihu Dance lessons to youth living in the cities. The youngsters will learn the original form of Bihu and it will help promote the dance," said Deepjyoti Hazarika, an organiser.
At the workshop, students are taught to bend their bodies and perform proper hand movements while dancing Bihu. Male folk are taught to use the Dhol, and get used to its beatings, rollins, cuts and such. Bihu is associated with agriculture and is celebrated as a thanksgiving festival. It has three different forms - Magh, Rongali and Kati Bihu.
"Earlier, the Bihu Dance was not very popular. But now, so many young boys and girls have started learning the Bihu dance and perform on the occasion. Now, the Bihu Dance has become more popular," said Purabi Gogoi Das, Bihu dance expert
"In this workshop they taught us Bihu song, dance and dhol so it's very good. I have leant many things," said Mausumi Gogoi, a participant.
Such workshops and programs help the young generation to remain close to their culture. (ANI)
