Duck fathering chicken experiment could bring extinct animals back to life

London, Tue, 26 Mar 2013 ANI

London, Mar. 26 (ANI): A breakthrough experiment, which saw a duck fathering a chicken, could help save endangered animals or bring back animals wiped off the face of the earth, say researchers.

According to reports, researchers at the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai injected a chicken's germ cells into the reproductive organs of a male duck embryo, which when the bird matured, began producing chicken's sperm.

Scientists said that this innovative technique will now allow hens to lay the eggs of other birds - from songbirds to eagles, the Daily Express reported.

Researcher Mike McGrew said that the ultimate goal of their team is to save endangered species - or even bring back extinct ones.

The team is made up of researchers, who created genetically modified chickens that prevented the spread of bird flu and - most notably - Dolly the sheep, the world's first cloned mammal.

Meanwhile, another team of scientists recently inserted the genetic material of an extinct amphibian into the donor eggs of another species of living frog, reviving a species that had been thought extinct. (ANI)
