Unexpected snowfall boosts tourism in Manali

Manali , Sun, 24 Mar 2013 ANI

Manali, Mar 24 (ANI): The hill town resort of Manali received unexpected snowfall on Sunday, which is proving to be a boom for the area's tourism industry.

Snow fell early on Sunday and soon blanketed the area in a thick cover.

Manoj Kumar, a tourist, said, "I have come in from Chandigarh. I had come to see snowfall in Manali. Today we are very happy to have witnessed it."

Though the region has been receiving occasional snowfall for several weeks, local residents were surprised by the heavy snowfall as winter is in its last phase.

Manali residents were seen making snowman and tossing snowballs at each other, whilst tourists were thrilled to witness snowflakes falling on their clothes.

The usual season for snowfall in Manali and Shimla normally remains up to the first couple of weeks of March.

The hill town of Manali is located at an altitude of 2,050 meters in the Beas River valley and is about 270 kilometres north of Shimla.

Snow is a delight for the tourists visiting from the plains, as they visit the hill stations in northern states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, especially in the winter season. (ANI)
