China becomes world's 5th largest arms exporter: Report

Washington, Mon, 18 Mar 2013 ANI

Washington, Mar 17 (ANI): China has replaced Britain as the world's fifth-largest arms exporter, which is the country's highest ranking since the Cold War, with Pakistan the main recipient.

According to Sweden-based think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China's volume of weapons exports between 2008 and 2012 rose 162 percent compared to the previous five year period.

The firm said that China's share of the global arms trade rose from two percent to five percent.

SIPRI said China replaces Britain in the top five arms-dealing countries between 2008 and 2012, a group dominated by the United States and Russia, which accounted for 30 percent and 26 percent of weapons exports, Fox News reports.

According to the report, the shift, outlined in SIPRI's Trends in International Arms Transfers report, marks China's first time as a top-five arms exporter since the think tank's 1986-1990 data period.

The report pointed out that Pakistan, which accounted for 55 percent of Chinese arms exports, is likely to remain the largest recipient of Chinese arms in the coming years due to large outstanding and planned orders for combat aircraft, submarines and frigates. (ANI)
