Swiss tourist rape suspects quizzed

Madhya Pradesh,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Sun, 17 Mar 2013 IANS

Bhopal, March 17 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta Sunday said that foreign tourists were not keeping local authorities informed about their movements as per rules even as police rounded up a number of suspects in connection with the gang-rape of a Swiss tourist.

Gupta termed as "unfortunate" the gang-rape of the Swiss woman in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district Friday night.

"What happened is unfortunate. When foreign tourists come, they should inform the SP (Superintendent of Police) about their movement and plans. This is not being followed," he said.

Gupta said the government would take steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

"They had pitched their tent in the outer area of the city.... but such incidents should not happen. We will think of what more can be done for foreign tourists," he said.

The woman was gang raped Friday night by eight men near a forest in Datia district where she was camping for the night alongwith her husband. The rape took place at Jhadia village, eight km from Datia town, at 9 p.m. A medical examination confirmed rape.

According to reports, over 20 people have been detained and are being questioned.

The couple were on their way back from the temple town of Orchha, and were planning to go to see the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Her husband told the police that four men committed the rape while the others held them. The accused - around eight in number -allegedly raped her, assaulted her husband and made away with their belongings that included cash, laptop, camera, torches and mobile phones.

The 39-year-old woman and her husband, both adventure tourists, have left for New Delhi.

The Swiss embassy has got in touch with authorities in Madhya Pradesh and requested speedy probe into the incident.

Swiss Ambassador Linus von Castelmur has already spoken to the victim and assured her of all help.
