Jammu/Srinagar, Mar.14 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Home Minister Sajjad Kichloo said Thursday that the state government is effectively reviewing security in the Kashmir Valley after five paramilitary personnel and two militants were killed in a gun battle in Bemina.
The attack took place on March 13, and a day later, Parliament was in a state of bedlam with the opposition demanding the government's explanation on its inability to stop these shameful and tragic attacks in different parts of the country.
On Thursday, Srinagar was placed under curfew tyo prevent untoward incidents.
Kichloo said: "The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, is in Srinagar. I will also go there shortly. We are conducting a security review in the region. We are also in talks with senior paramilitary officers and are collectively reviewing the security situation in the valley."
Militants often attacked security bases in Kashmir during the 1990s, when there was a full-blown insurgency against Indian rule in a region over which India and Pakistan fought two of their three wars. But there have been very few in recent years.
Tensions have been running high in Srinagar since last month, when India hanged Afzal Guru for an attack on the country's parliament in 2001. The authorities have sought to quash clashes between protesters and police by imposing curfews. (ANI)
