New Delhi, Mar 2 (ANI): The Delhi Police resorted to tear gas shelling to quell and contain violence that erupted following report of a girl's rape in a government run school in the national capital.
A seven-year-old girl, student of Class 2, was allegedly raped inside the premises of a municipal school leading to a violent protest on Friday.
Three people were detained for questioning for the rape while 14 others were detained for destroying and damaging government vehicles and property.
Outraged at the horrific incident involving the rape of a seven year old girl, angry locals had taken to the streets, vandalising state transport buses other than pelting stones at police personnel.
Enraged locals demanded arrest of the culprits as they expressed their anger by clashing with police who were deployed in the area soon after initial reports of violence by demonstrators.
According to reports, some police personnel have sustained injuries during stone pelting.
A local who witnessed the violence spoke to the media about the incident.
"Violence broke out after locals found out about the rape. One teacher has been arrested but the situation is still tense. If the public gets its hand on the culprits, they might not be spared; I don't know what will happen," said Anil, an eyewitness.
Reportedly, the incident occurred at a school managed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi where the victim had gone to take her mid-day meal on Thursday (February 28).
The incident has taken place at a time when the issue of women security and rape laws is the epicentre of debate in the Indian parliament in the wake of surge in brutal sexual assaults including that of a 23-year old physiotherapist, who was gang raped aboard a moving bus.
Soon after the rampage by angry mob, police teams were rushed to the site of violence.
Police personnel armed with batons and helmets took charge of the area in a bid to halt further violence.
Reportedly, three people have been taken into police custody for interrogation in the case. (ANI)
