Jayanthi Natarajan lauds General Budget, stresses on industry accountability

New Delhi, Fri, 01 Mar 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Mar. 1 (ANI): Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan on Friday lauded the Union Budget for 2013-14, saying it fulfilled her ministry's requirement even as she called for industries to pay attention to environment and be responsible towards it.

Natarajan said the budget for the fiscal year 2013-2014 is justified amid tough economic conditions the country is facing.

"I feel that it's a good budget and my ministry, although we didn't receive what we actually requested for, we received a little less, just a little less than our usual budget but what is more important is for industry to understand how they can help environment and for industry to focus upon the environment instead of blaming the environment or treating the environment as something opposite," she said.

Natarajan further said that industries should focus on environment to ensure a balanced and sustainable growth.

"I feel that industry should be responsible just like we have corporate social responsibility, the industry should have corporate environment responsibility and every industry has a responsibility to the country and to the environment to ensure a balanced and sustainable development otherwise it is not proper development," she added.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, who presented the General Budget in Parliament yesterday, said a scheme to encourage cities and municipalities to take up waste-to-energy projects would be initiated.

Chidambaram maintained that green energy is the Central Government's key concern in addition to announcing incentives to non-conventional wind energy sector. (ANI)
