Protests erupt in Karnataka after Centre notifies Cauvery Tribunal's Award

Mysore , Wed, 20 Feb 2013 ANI

Mysore, Feb. 20 (ANI): Protests erupted here in Karnataka on Wednesday after the Central Government endorsed a gazette notification of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's (CWDT) final award.

Under the banner of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Karnataka protection forum), the protestors damaged the windowpanes and furniture of the Divisional Railway Manager's office and pelted stones on police officials.

The CWDT awarded both the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to share 270 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of water.

Earlier on February 4, as per a notification of the Supreme Court, the tribunal had awarded Tamil Nadu 419 TNC of water whereas its demand was for 562 TMC.

However, the protestors in Mysore contended that the Karnataka had been deprived of its due share and blocked roads, literally creating chaos in the province.

Commenting on the vandalism witnessed at the Office of Divisional Railway Manager of South Western Railway, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Basvaraj Maalgatti said that a case had been lodged and even registered against the protestors who were arrested.

"We have rounded up all the 30 fellows. We arrested them and we will take legal action against them," said Maalgatti.

After the Gazette notification the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) chaired by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) will cease to exist. (ANI)
